I admit I was a bit delirious when I arrived at Southern Pies in the township of Kangaroo Valley. After running a marathon punctuated with 3 stops at various pie shops on the coldest day of the year I was sore, a little nauseous with a dose of hypothermia. So I was not able to fully appreciate what is one of the nicest towns in southern NSW. But like the Southern Pies slogan, this is all ‘For the love of pie’.
Southern Pies is relatively new, being established in 2013, however, they are fully focused on crafting the perfect pie and their store is a new and exciting entrant in the region with another store over in Bomaderry. The following quote on their website captures their pie-fectionsim.
“For us, the perfect pie is balance. Balance of flavours and seasoning. The right ratio of filling to pastry. Pastry that isn’t too greasy and melts in your mouth, but doesn’t fall apart. Lean meat, cooked until tender.”
Running Stats:
- Distance: 42.2km
- Pie Running Time: 4 hours and 30 minutes
Pie Charts:
Southern Pies is known for its Cheeseburger pie. And, quite frankly, we could not go without tasting this pie. A fusion made in heaven of all that is good with fast food.
- Pies: Cheeseburger pie (yes these exist!); Classic meat pie
- Pastry: The pastry met their quote of not being too greasy and melt in your mouth. Not the best pastry we’ve tried but still rock solid and reliable.
- Filling: Cheeseburger filling was done exceptionally well. If you close your eyes you would think you are actually eating a burger. It’s like Ronald McDonald himself went out and created a pie.
- Cost: $7
- Sauce tax: unknown.
Southern Highlands Pie Trail Run
The Southern ‘Pielands’ Trail Run went for the month of June. As ambassadors for ‘Pie time’ we ran to all of the 26 bakeries on the official Pie Trail to see what they had to offer. See our reviews of all 26 bakeries, their stories and their pies.

It's fair to say that my curiosity has continued to grow instead of fade as the years go on. It eventually came time to turn a few scribbled notes into some legible stories and travel tips for anyone with a similar curiosity as me.
